Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
